It’s Friday, and that can only mean one thing: time to do ANYTHING but homework. For those of you stuck on campus and without any great distractions immediately at hand, here are a bunch of links great for killing time. This time I’m recommending video footage, even if it all, once again, has a musical theme (hey, I can’t help my interests, all right?)--stuff to make you laugh, gawk in amazement, and maybe bristle with envy, but hopefully none will make you cry. Though there is one groaner in here, just for kicks.

Amateur, by Lasse Gjertsen: Fresh from Norway, this is the most hyperactive video editing job you may ever see. If you’re interested in more of the same, check out his vid of that name--Hyperactive. Remember that lame sumemr reality contest thing ABC did over the summer, "America's Got Talent"? Remember that crazy talented beatbox singer gal? If you missed it, here's a sample of Butterscotch.

But if you want to see absolutely crazy beatbox genius (not that she’s not good), you have GOT to check out Greg Patillo. He’s redone the Inspector Gadget theme song, written his own solo pieces, and gotten together with two of his buddies to form the band Project, which just put out their first CD. You can catch tons of their stuff on YouTube, but absolutely do not miss any of the links (especially this one) in this paragraph.

If you want to see more beatbox flute, there’s another fellow with a slightly different take: he records and replays what he performs, effectively creating an ensemble out of himself. Here is Mathieu Schneider's rendition of Libertango.

If flautists can do it, why not tubists? Oystein Baadsvik demonstrates the art of beatbox tuba. You don’t have to like the sound to respect his obvious love for the… art?

For those of you who consider electric guitar the only true instrument of coolness, view the ambidextrous virtuoso. Becoming the Archetype has nothing on this guy.

On the other hand, if you’re a fan of acoustic guitar, folk singing, population control, and parody duos from New Zealand, check out Flight of the Conchord’s “The Humans Are Dead.”

And last but not least, how is the world not a better place thanks to Acapella Nintendo?

Happy time wasting!

Another time killer. It is "Smoke on the Water" using traditional Japanese instruments and singing style. (Continued…)
